Acne Canada - Your Acne Treatment Guide

ACNE DO'S AND DON'TS

Skincare should not be undervalued. I mean we are talking about the body's largest organ, which protects our insides from the outside. It's both a filter and a barrier. Typically, we don't think about our skin's health and function until we're faced with a problem. When the problem (or problems) confronts us in the mirror, we desire quick results. Fair enough. But before you seek a solution, set up a skincare schedule-and follow it. After all, skin is for life.

Do

-Wash your face twice a day with warm water and a light, oil-free cleanser.

-Gently scrub your skin with a fine exfoliant to remove dead skin cells that clog pores.

-Apply acne medication such as salicylic acid or tea tree oil to manage blemishes.

-Use anti-inflammatories such as Allantoin to reduce redness and swelling.

-Apply products with vitamin C to reduce the marks that acne leaves behind.

-Use a water-based moisturizer to keep skin soft, smooth and hydrated.

-Keep hair clean and off your face.

-Change your pillowcases and towels often.

-Avoid irritated skin and use mild, fragrance-free detergents to clean your clothes.

-Replace cosmetic sponges and sterilize brushes to reduce bacteria.

-Drink plenty of water, eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly.

-Seek the advice of a dermatologist if your skin condition doesn't improve.

Don't

-Ignore it. It doesn't take much time to maintain great skin.

-Scrub your face or use hot water, as it will aggravate acne.

-Squeeze or pick pimples because this can spread infection and provoke scarring.

-Continue using harsh astringents and cleansers that irritate or over-dry your skin, which makes up by producing more oil.

-Expose skin to extreme temperatures or sunlight. The sun's UV rays can lead to dry, itchy, blistered skin and at worst, skin cancer.

-Use greasy oil-based cosmetics that can clog pores and trigger breakouts.

Break the cycle of acne. Be proud to be in your skin.
