Acne Scars by Acne Canada
True scars are hard to cover up with makeup and near impossible to reverse. The skin's surface is uneven with the appearance of pot-holes. Deep blemishes, picking, and squeezing can instigate or worsen this condition.
Acne scars result from a loss of tissue or excess tissue growth.
Ice-Pick Scars
Ice-pick scars are often small, but deep holes with steep sides that appear on the cheeks. They can be hard or soft, but only the latter can improve by stretching the skin.
Ragged Scars
Ragged scars are shallow holes with jagged edges.
Dell Scars
Dell scars are shallow holes with smooth edges that create a rippled effect on the skin's surface.
Follicular Macular Atrophy
Follicular macular atrophy looks like whiteheads on the back or chest. These scars can persist for a month or permanently.
Atrophic Macules
Atrophic macules are soft scars with a wrinkly base. They appear small on the face, or larger on the body. Blood vessels under the skin cause the scar to take on a bluish-purple tint, but eventually this fades to a pale ivory.
Keloids
Keloids are the result of excess collagen production. It starts as a pimple, but instead of healing it continues to grow into a hard, reddish-brown bump. They're mostly seen on the back, chest, shoulders and jawline of those who are genetically predisposed.
Acne Scar Treatments in Canada
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion balances the tone and texture of skin and stimulates collagen and elastin to help reverse the signs of aging. This peeling process involves tiny sodium bicarbonate or aluminum bicarbonate crystals that remove the surface layers of skin. It has been shown to be effective in reducing the appearance of mild to moderate scars, sun damage, stretch marks and age spots. For deep scarring, dermabrasion is recommended. The procedure is expensive and it may require multiple treatment sessions.
Blue Light Therapy
High-intensity blue light therapy is used to treat acne blemishes by killing bacteria and reducing inflammation. This procedure does not use ultraviolet light as does other forms of light therapy. The treatment usually involves short, multiple sessions. Side effects may include mild dryness, irritation and changes in pigmentation. While it is important to not overexpose yourself to the natural sun, it is important to get sufficient sunlight for vitamin D production. Fatigue and irritability may indicate a lack of exposure to sunlight.
Laser Therapy
Laser therapy involves removing one layer at a time of surface skin with a carbon dioxide laser and/or erbium YAG laser. Heat during the procedure stimulates collagen, and tightens and smoothes skin to reduce the appearance of shallow scars. The results are not immediate and may take upwards of a year to notice. Laser skin resurfacing is most effective when in combination with other acne scar treatments, such as surgery.
Skin Types
Acne-Prone Skin
Acne-prone skin is characterized by inflamed and irritated skin, with whiteheads, blackheads and various forms of pimples. The surface can be oily and the skin tone is sometimes blotchy and uneven. Genetics and hormones are the prime factors linked to acne. Salicylic acid is a gentle exfoliant that clears skin and prevents future breakouts. Sulfur is another targeted acne medication.
Dry or Sensitive Skin
Dry or sensitive skin is characterized by rough, tight, irritated skin. Environmental factors such as the sun and wind, diet and harsh skincare products can worsen the skin. Age, genetics and hormones are the prime factors linked to dry or sensitive skin. Exfoliating AHAs are best applied before a moisturizer to help skin absorb water and hydrating ingredients.
Normal or Combination Skin
Normal or combination skin is the most common skin type. It is characterized by an oilier T-zone with occasional breakouts in this area. The cheeks and outer eye areas are usually drier. It's important to moisturize during the winter and protect against excess oil in the summer.
Oily Skin
Oily skin is characterized by large pores and thick, greasy skin. This skin type is prone to whiteheads, blackheads and various forms of pimples. Skincare products should control oil and shine, as well as clear and tighten pores. It is important to keep skin hydrated with an oil-free moisturizer. Despite the gleam on your face, drying out your skin is not the answer, as it can instigate more oil production.
